Metropolitan was organized in 1914 out of necessity. This local community, formerly known as Nepperhan and now called Runyon Heights, was the first middle-class African-American community in Westchester. There wasn’t a church within this vicinity at which the community members felt welcome. These community members, who became the founders, first met as a prayer group in each other’s homes. In 1928, the Church was formally organized as the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.
Metropolitan has served this community, the larger community of Yonkers, and lower Westchester for over 100 years. It continues to be a beacon of God’s light and love as it provides support to families, especially the elderly and children by providing food, clothing, and shelter in their time of need, and most importantly has been the spiritual rock within the community.
